INTRODUCTION
Within the next few years, Jackson, Ben and Daniel all want to move out of their family home into homes of their own. Having a home of your own is an integral part of getting a life of your own. This website chronicles our progress in making this happen.
These three young men have bright futures of unlimited possibility, involvement, contribution and independence. They are three young men who have plans, goals, hobbies and the expectation of a life rich in experiences and relationships. Between them they dance, paint, surf, camp, ride motor bikes, volunteer, swim, water ski, bushwalk, work at the Hyatt, work at a hospital, work as a courier and have family and friends who love and respect them.
They also happen to have a disability.
But this will not deter their families from successfully completing the next step in their lives – a home of their own. Not a group home where the three of them will live together. Ben, Daniel and Jackson will each have their own home and choose who lives with them. They will each hold the key to their own front door and decide who they do and do not invite into their home.
Getting a Life is the name of the family governed project established in 2005 by the mothers of Ben – Cheryl Pattrick, Daniel – Karen Connaughton and Jackson – Sally Richards.
